1. International Conference on New Literatures and their Relevance to 21st Century
was held on 17th and 18th December 2014 by the Department of English.

The Department of English as a team under the leadership Dr. D. Joseph Chandra, HOD, conducted for the first time a UGC sponsored International Conference on New Literatures (ICNL 2014) & Their Relevance to the 21st Century. The Chief Guest was Dr Beena Giridharan, Dean, Teaching & Learning, Curtin University, Sarawak, Malaysia, who delivered the Inaugural Address. Dr Armstrong, Head, Department of English, University of Madras was the Guest of Honour and delivered a lecture on the Uniqueness of Canadian Literature. Dr Chandra was the Chairperson of the Conference,  Dr Devaraj, the Convener, Dr M Lazer Selvaraj & Dr I Felicita Mary Prabha were the Coordinators, and Mr. K D Francis & Ms Christina Sagaya Mary served as the Organizing Secretaries. Core committees were formed involving the Staff & Student volunteers of the English Department.

The Brochure of the ICNL was printed, having 25 themes, including Search for Identity, Alienation, Exile, Decolonization, Diasporic Consciousness, Tribal, Subaltern and Ethnic Voices. The flyer was sent to the Universities & Colleges in and around India. 47 Abstracts were received & compiled in a CD format. In the afternoon, Parallel Sessions for Paper Presentations were held for Participants from all over the Country. On the second day of the Conference, two specially invited Resource persons, Dr. Dasan, former Professor of English, Mysore University and Dr. Marx, Professor of English, Pondicherry University spoke on the significance of Postcolonial Literatures and Subaltern Literatures as distinct from the British canon of literature. In the afternoon, Parallel Sessions for Paper Presentations were held for Participants from all over the Country.

The Valedictory Session started at 3.30 p.m. with a worship song. Dr. Joseph Chandra introduced the Chief Guest, Dr Om P Juneja, the President of International Council for Canadian Studies, Ottawa, Canada. He spoke on the New Perspectives of Literatures in English written by writers from the former British colonies. The Conference came to a close at 5 p.m. and certificates were distributed to all the participants. A special monograph on this memorable intellectual event is under preparation.

2.Thiru S.X. Swamikannu Endowment Lecture 2015
by Prof. Dr. Brenda Beck, Anthropologist and Folklorist, University of Toronto was held on 12th February 2015 at 11.30 AM in Yedanapalli Hall. On 12th February 2015, the annual Endowment Lecture was held at Yedanapalli Hall. The title of the lecture was ‘Relevance of a Singing Bard', and the Chief Guest / speaker for the day was Dr Brenda Beck from the University of Toronto, Canada.

The event began with a customary prayer song, followed by the Welcome Address by Dr D.  Louis Joseph Chandra, Head of the Department of English. In addition to Professor Dr. Brenda Beck from the University of Toronto, Dr. Eric Miller, Director of the World Storytelling Institute also graced the occasion.

Dr Mary Vidya Porselvi, organizer of the event, introduced Dr Brenda Beck as a scholar who has completed fifty years of research in oral literature. Dr Brenda first came to India in 1965, when she began her doctoral research on the ‘Annanmaars' of erstwhile Ponnivala Naadu (now Kongunadu) near Kangeyam. Dr. Brenda thrilled the audience when she began her address in fluent Tamil. Her address was on the tradition and value of Tamil folktales.
