HOD's Message

I deem it my privilege and honour to present a brief history, vision and mission of the Department of Sociology, Loyola College.

The department was started with the sole intention of offering quality education in Sociology through innovative methods. Right from its inception in 1983, it was one of the most sought after courses of study in Loyola.

Later, a more job oriented post graduate programme called Medical Sociology was started in 2004. But as the demand for this programme was declining due to some technical difficulties the students faced like getting equivalent to Sociology certificate from various Universities etc., recently from 2015-16 academic year onwards this is replaced by a general M.A. programme in Sociology.

Looking back at the path we have travelled for the past 33 years, I feel elated that apart from imparting sociological knowledge, we have been able to inspire and develop responsible citizens and change agents for the well being of the society.

We are proud of our alumni, many of whom are in respectable positions in Administration (IAS, IPS, IRS), Business, Academics, NGO management, Hospital administration, and the like.

The Department encourages and guides the students choose appropriate carreers and prepare them for competitive examinations.

We are proud to say that many of our past students have become good priests, serving God and people and several undergoing formation.

The teachers, as second parents, are extremely committed to accompany and form the students into finest human beings through mentoring, remedial classes etc.

Both the UG and the PG curriculam is in par with the UGC's and it is revised and updated periodically in accordance with the changing times and needs of the society.

With the Ignatian pedagody, which is inclusive and participatory, the teaching-learning process is made interesting and effective. The post graduate students are trained to do independent mini researches and projects too.

Developing our department into a Research Department is our next important goal.

I wish to place on record my gratitude to the Jesuit management for their continued encouragement and support, my honourable colleagues for their unconditional co-operation and the students for their loyalty and love of the department and college.

With regards and Best Wishes
